A Fighting Chance
USA (2011) 90 min.
DIR Alex Shofner, Takashi Doscher
CAST Kyle Maynard

Kyle Maynard was born with a congenital condition which left him with a seemingly insurmountable obstacle as well as losing his first thirty-five wrestling matches in a row. His determination led him to a standout high school wrestling career where he won over two hundred matches, including three in the state tournament. Now 22, we follow Kyle as he chases his biggest dream: competing in a mixed martial arts fight against other competitors. Kyle must juggle training for his fight with his career as a motivational speaker as well as the difficulties of opening his first fitness gym.

In addition to his quest to fight, he struggles for normalcy in a world not built for him. We see the world from his perspective, and come to understand his history and motivation. Rejected at the last moment for a fighting license by the state of Georgia, Kyle must look elsewhere for a place to fight. In the face of mounting public opposition in the fighting community and with the extreme difficulty in finding an opponent willing to fight Kyle, the very occurrence of the fight itself is placed in jeopardy. By seeing the world through Kyle's eyes and following him on this journey, we are forced to ask ourselves: what is 'normal', anyway?
